The Milestones

What started as a small cement plant in the year 1983 has today grown into the eighth biggest cement manufacturer in the world. On the way the company achieved several milestones. Here are a few major ones.


1983-1997     1998-2002     2003-2006



1983-1997
  •  In the year 1983 company went into business with the first Awarpur Cement Works Plant.
  • In the year 1987 the second plant was set up.
  • In the year 1993 Jharsuguda grinding unit was set up.
  • In the year 1994 Hirmi Cement Works plant got operational.
  • In the year 1996 Gujarat Cement Works Plant I got operational.
 
1998 – 2002
  • Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat Cement Works (II) Plants were set up.
  • In the year 1999 the Ratnagiri Cement Works plant got operational. In the same year Narmada Cement Company Limited was bought over. Bulk cement terminals were built is Mangalore, Navi Mumbai and Colombo.
  •  In the year 2001 Grasim acquired 10 per cent stake in L&T and subsequently increased stake to 15.3 per cent by October 2002 Durgapur grinding unit was also set up.
 
2003 – 2006
  • In the year 2003 the board of Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) decided to de-merge its cement business into a separate cement company (CemCo).Grasim decided to acquire an 8.5 per cent equity stake from L&T and then made an open offer for 30 per cent of the equity of CemCo, to acquire management control of the company.
  •  In the year 2004 the implementation process to de-merge the cement business of L&T was completed. In the same year Grasim acquired controlling stake in the newly formed company UltraTech.
  •  In the year 2006 Narmada Cement Company Limited amalgamated with UltraTech Cement Ltd.
